Halo 2 LIVE Service Ending, Everybody Wins!

We mentioned eons ago about why Xbox LIVE would only allow 100 friends, among other limitations that didn't make sense. The culprit was Halo 2 and the facts were that since so many people still played the original Xbox game online, that Microsoft couldn't update. Well, the top played Xbox game's ability to play online is coming to an end on April 15th, and we are all excited for this. Yes, even the Halo 2 players, because they get some neat goodies.

On April 15, 2010, we will discontinue the Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox games playable on Xbox v1 and Xbox 360. In our continuing efforts to evolve the service, we need to make changes to the LIVE service that are not compatible with original Xbox v1 games.

What this means to Xbox 360 users is that we may see some changes in the Friends system, and possibly other updates now that older LIVE games are coming off of the servers.

For those loyal customers who played the ancient, but brilliant game, they are given some great parting gifts. First, they are going to receive 400 MS points that they can use on anything in the Marketplaces for up to one year. Secondly, they are getting a free three-month upgrade for XBOX Live Gold. And lastly, they will be able to participate in the Halo: Reach via an e-mail which will contain a code to sign up, if they wish.

The beta invitation is important because these users are playing the older version of the game for a reason. Hopefully Microsoft can tap into that user-base and see why they wouldn't move from Halo 2 and possibly make changes to the Halo series, which, lately has not received the best marks even though sales have been stable.

Are you still playing Halo 2? And if so, how do you feel about the switch?
