The Flintstones Are Back

The Flintstones Are Back

In possibly the strangest news to come out of the recent big network upfronts is the return of The Flintstones. The oddity here is not that one of the most recognized series of all time will be returning to the airwaves, but more that it is being headed by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. The deal has MacFarlane teaming up with FOX (of course) and Warner Bros Television, who owns the rights to the franchise.

MacFarlane said that the first character he ever drew was Fred Flintstone and added,

So it's appropriate that events have come full circle, allowing me to produce the newest incarnation of this great franchise. Plus, I think America is finally ready for an animated sitcom about a fat stupid guy with a wife who's too good for him.

To find out more about the new series, hit the break.

Seth will be working with Kara Vallow, who works with him on Family Guy and Dan Palladino, who was part of the Gilmore Girls production team. Clearly WB wanted their people in the room to help oversee the process. Not surprising, as many of the shareholders were concerned that Seth's natural humor might come through in this new project. With a history of programs like Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show, plus his regular participation in Robot Chicken they probably have reason to be concerned.

Fox president Kevin Reilly said,

The Flintstones are among the funniest and most beloved characters in television history, and we can't wait to introduce them to a whole new generation on Fox. FOX has long been home to iconic families like the Simpsons and the Griffins, so I have no doubt that the Flintstones and the Rubbles are going to fit right in on our air.

I'm not sure if he was trying to ease the minds of shareholders or egging MacFarlane on, but either way I think we are in for a treat. I think the most important question he plans to answer with the new series, set to begin airing in 2013 is, "What is the animal version of an iPad?"
