Amazon Prime Instant Video Inks Deal with MGM Studios

If you thought that Amazon was going to allow their Prime Instant Video service to just linger around now that it's on the Xbox 360, you were sadly mistaken. As more and more media partners find new outlets for their content, Amazon is trucking away at new partnership deals.

This week, Amazon went right to the top of the studio world and nabbed a huge licensing deal with MGM Studios. Amazon Instant Video will now have access to classic films and TV shows going all the way back to the 1980s and can hopefully snatch up a couple of those Netflix detractors with A-movies like The Terminator, Rainman and Silence of the Lambs.

Brad Beale, director of digital video content acquisition for Amazon, said,

We are focused on adding even more titles to... Prime Instant Video library. Our customers tell us they love having tons of movies and TV shows to choose from, which is why we are focused on adding even more titles to our already extensive Prime Instant Video library.

This now brings the total number of media in their catalog to over 18,000 movies and TV shows. To compare, Netflix runs with a squad of 60,000, so while Amazon may have some work to do, it's clear that sometimes quality is better than quantity. Also, while MGM already has deals inked with YouTube and Netflix, Amazon's move here was to keep nipping at the heels of its competitors.

Amazon does also have a little bit of an incentive for their VOD service. You must be a Prime member, which runs you $79/year, but includes free two-day shipping on pretty much any physical product on Amazon.com as well as provides instant access to Prime Instant Video on any of their supported devices.

Are there any Prime members out there excited that Amazon's service continues to grow and expand to new outlets? Let us know in the comments section.
