Sony Confirms the Rumors - PS3 Slim

It's official, Sony announced this week the existence of the long rumored PlayStation 3 Slim. The impressive part is that the images we have been seeing over the past few weeks were mostly correct. That almost never happens. So, now, let's get to the details, shall we?

The new console is black (of course) and has a 120GB hard drive. They will be available here in the States, as well as Europe and most of Asia starting September 1st (Japan on the 3rd), and will retail for $299. Yes, you heard me, a PS3 for the price of a 360. Sony Computer Entertainment had this to say about the new device:

Best Buy Price Limbo: How Low They Won't Go but How Low They Are

My fellow upstream contributor and co-host Nick recently wrote an article about Best Buy and their yellow clearance tag of a brand image. Well Nick I'm sorry to say that in this story they don't live up to your expectations or the expectations of some very upset customers.

The Zune HD is here!

The Zune HD is here!

As much as I am not a fan of Best Buy and their yellow clearance tag of a brand image, the fact is that many decent consumers shop there, as it is one of the last free-standing big box electronic stores. So it is only right that I rejoice alongside my colleagues for the announcement that we can finally pre-order the new Microsoft Zune HD beginning today, August 16th! Microsoft has teamed up with the electronics giant to provide an up close and personal sneak peek at the device in select cities on August 22nd and 23rd, as well as pre-order support leading up to the release on September 15th.

But what about the features? I'm glad you asked. For starters, the first touch-screen Zune will be available in both a 16GB and 32GB version, priced at $219.99 and $289.99, respectively. There will be five original colors to choose from but if you head over to ZuneOriginals, you can get ten unique engravings to customize your Zune with, all designed by guest artists. Now for the fun part. The Zune HD is boasting several things that the coffee sipping iPhone and iPod touch users (sorry, Jon) would only dream of being able to accomplish on their soon-to-be rudimentary metal playtoys.

Apple's Not Havin' The Tablet For Holiday '09

For many years Apple has held a conference to announce products that will be released in the upcoming months. This year though, Apple is holding an unexpected, second conference and there has been much speculation around what will be announced. The second event has occurred before and was very effective in helping Apple transition from the iPod mini to the iPod nano.

iPhone Check Deposits

You hate banks, admit it. It is such a haste to go down there and wait in line, or deal with those terrible ATMs. Well, USAA Bank understands your frustration, and has found a way for some of you to avoid almost all of it. They have released an iPhone app to allow you to deposit checks into your account just by taking a picture of them. Wayne Peacock, EVP of the bank, told The New York Times:

THQ Picks up Midway San Diego

THQ Picks up Midway San Diego

Last month we announced that most of Midway was purchased by Warner Brothers, and since, the Newcastle studio has been closed due to lack of a buyer. That left us with the question of what would become of San Diego. We now have an answer, and this one isn't the terrible result Newcastle faced.

THQ purchased the studio this week for $200,000 plus liabilities and employee expenses, including unpaid vacation time. The publisher has made 4o offers to studio employees to stay on as developers for THQ, with more to come. One thing that didn't seem to come with the deal was the franchise developed at the studio, TNA iMPACT!, although the game engine was included. There is no telling what this means for the future of the franchise, but we will keep an eye out and let you know when we hear.
