E3 2010 - Nintendo Aims For The Sky With The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword

This year's Nintendo Keynote kicked off with Regie Fils-amie unveiling a new Zelda game for the Wii console, The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword. Just when you thought you had mastered the Master Sword, Nintendo has changed up the control scheme to reflect the capabilities of Wii Motion Plus.

In the live demo by Miamoto we saw that the player will need to use the new controls to their advantage in order to put down the enemies of Hyrule. For example, enemies with weapons will actually use them for defense as well as attacking. Therefore, you have to swing your sword in such a way that you will hit the enemies opening.

Hit the break to read about the shield and more!

The shield is also more integral for attack and defense since you can deflect projectiles back at enemies or shield bash them. But wait, there's more! In addition to bows and bombs there is an assortment of new items to use like, whips and beetles (flying crabs).

The whip is useful for grabbing items and really irritating the hell out of your foes while the flying beetle is remote controlled by Link to grab far away items and give you a bird's eye view of the very picturesque Hyrule landscape. The key to using each item correctly is to hold the Wiimote and Nunchuck appropriately.

For the Master Sword, hold it like a sword, to use the shield, hold the Nunchuck in front of you like a shield. The same holds true for the bow, bombs and other items. I am excited for this new installment of the Zelda series because the new controls will usher in a more fluid gaming experience whether you are exploring or in the midst of combat.
