New Motorola Social Phone, You Are Their Last Hope

The competition in the smart phone market is fierce. Apple with its iPhone (not as "smart" as the others), Google has its G1 with Android and Palms very successful Pre are giant contenders in this market right now but Motorola is looking to get its piece of the pie and they aren't just hungry for it, they need it.

It's no secret that Motorola has been teetering on the edge of financial meltdown for a long, long time now and they are finding themselves in a position that isn't all too different from Palms before the successful Pre released that raised their stock from $4 to $14. Motorola hasn't put out a popular handset since the RAZR (yikes) and if you are familiar with some of their previous smart phones like the Motorola Q then they have a long way to go in order to break the mold and make it in this market. In an effort to achieve this and save themselves Motorola would like to introduce us to the Cliq.

They describe it as more of a "social phone" than a smart phone. It is built off the Android platform and the interface will be directly connected to Facebook, MySpace and Twitter status updates and contacts. They put estimated Cliq sales for the 4th quarter at 750,000 which is about 5% of their overall handset sales.

I think what Motorola is trying to do by bringing out a "social phone" is a good strategy to compete for the younger iPhone demographic and such but I'm wondering if it will be successful enough to give Motorola the market share they need to effectively save their company. The good news is that Android has been steadily gaining in market share and because it is built for development Motorola doesn't have to invest in creating and maintaining a hub for the apps. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Do you think Motorola's Cliq can take on the "Jesus Phone" among others and bring them back from purgatory?

Forget the G1, Google's MyTouch is the epitome of what Android is right now. Now THAT is a badass phone!
