Corning Shows Gorilla Glass 4 and Fiber Optic Cables [Live]

Saturday Jan 10, 2015 (00:14:23)

Description

Corning is a brand known for their glass-related products. In the past, the face of the company was kitchen equipment, but today things have changed. Today the best-known product out of the company is probably the Gorilla Glass brand. Gorilla Glass is used on most smartphones today, as it is incredibly strong and resilient.

The newest version, Gorilla Glass 4, is even more resilient than previous versions. Smartphone developers can alternately choose to use a 0.4mm thickness while still retaining the protection of Gorilla Glass 3 at 0.55mm thickness.

Another usage of glass in the modern technological world is fiber optic cables, which the company also produces. Creating fiber optic versions of USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt cables, Corning is able to make significantly longer cables than is normally possible without some sort of inline amplifier, ranging up to 50 meters. Those cables are available now starting at $109.
