WinPho 7 = Microsoft iPhone

It is no secret that we have had a lot of complaints about the iPhone and the things that a device in its product category should do that Apple seems to have no interest in doing. It is also no secret that we have been excited about the future of Windows Phone 7 Series as a replacement product for the iPhone seeing as we have all had several WinMo devices over the years (I still use one for a TV remote). Well, some recent revelations about the next generation of WinPho indicate Microsoft has lost their way.

The #1 selling point of WinMo has always been multi-tasking. The ability to listen to Pandora while using your navigation is wonderful (if not a huge drain on the battery). Unfortunately, Microsoft seems to have decided that no one would want to keep using this feature because the iPhone doesn't have it available on its platform and Apple is kicking WinMo's butt.

Another feature that has been available on WinMo forever is Copy/Paste. In fact, Microsoft pioneered the feature in the mobile space in even the early editions on their mobile OS. Well, who needs that? WinPho 7 will not offer Copy/Paste at launch. A statement from Microsoft on the topic said,

Windows Phone 7 Series will not initially offer copy and paste; instead, we try to solve the most common uses for copy and paste via single-tap action. For example, people often want to take an address and view it on a map, highlight a term in the browser and do a search or copy a phone number to make a call. Instead of the user manually doing a copy and paste in these scenarios, we recognize those situations automatically and make them happen with just one touch. In our early testing people have been pleased with this approach, but we're always listening to feedback and will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear.

Perfect. A feature you have offered forever will be removed from a new version because of context menus. Wait. Didn't we already have context menus and one of the items was copy? Yes, you say? Oh well. When you are redesigning your product to appeal to the lowest common denominator to take on the iPhone beast, I guess you have to take out advanced features like copy and paste so you can add simple things like Xbox Live.
