The Avengers Revealed

Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, made some interesting announcements in an interview with SFX Magazine about the upcoming Avengers film. The most notable was the team itself.

We know Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man will be front and center, as well as Thor and Captain America, all coming to the team off of their self-titled films over the next 18 months. The hardest part will be maintaining the individual characters while still creating a team. On this, he said,

My only concern is that when we launch a franchise--whichever character's franchise that may be--it should stand on its own two feet... So by the time 'The Avengers' comes in 2012, it's not just a team superhero movie with a bunch of characters with powers. It's three people - four including the Hulk; five including Nick Fury - who you've seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time.

We also know of other characters that will be (or possibly) making appearances in the film, including Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). What we don't know about it the presence of Ant-Man and Wasp, both co-founders of the Avengers. The statement seems to suggest that they will not play a role in the founding of the movie version of the team. About the introduction of the new characters in Iron Man 2, he said,

It's fun now, and we're introducing some new characters in {'Iron Man 2'}. But it's not about just cramming in lots of new people; that's sort of the cardinal sin of the sequel - adding in too many characters. This is totally Tony Stark's story. And that's gonna weave into Thor's story, and Steve Rogers' story, and it's already ingrained with Nick Fury's story and an organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D.

Maybe what he is saying is that, while we will see a lot of Marvel Universe characters in the upcoming films, the story of the Avengers film will just be about Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury and Hulk. If that is the case, it will make for an interesting interpretation of the Avengers, but not so much a true-to-comic story. That hasn't always been a necessity for a successful film, though. And the left out characters might bet ehre, just not focus points, so as to not confuse new people.

We have to wait until 2012 to find out for sure, but I think we are getting a good glimpse now of what is to come.
