Living in Digital Times - Real Products for Real People

2014-01-06

Jeffrey Powers decided to start the show off right by talking with Robin Raskin, a former PC Magazine editor now with Living in Digital Times, who has brought products that people really need to CES 2014.

Canary is a home automation hub, in a similar vein to Nexia, but with the added bonus of temperature monitoring, noise detection and other less automation-focused sensors.

Through their focus on families, Living in Digital Times also showed off Kurio, a smartphone for kids without the full smartphone price tag. In addition, the phone sports some family-friendly features, such as app-specific time limits so parents can turn off games at 8pm and texting at 9pm.

Robin also discusses a product to help coaches better determine whether players should stay on the field or not after a hit.

Have Light and Power in Emergencies with Waka Waka

2014-01-07

What's better than a solar-powered charger combined with a light? A company that makes said product and then helps third world countries by making the devices available at an affordable rate to people who make less than $2 per day in countries that do not have an electrical grid. Wakka Wakka does just that.

Dubbed the "iPhone of solar chargers," in an emergency situation, a single charge can give you 200 hours of LED light or can fully charge a dead smartphone. With a five month shelf life for discharge, you can leave this device in the drawer and save it for an emergency situation. The Waka Waka Power is available now and the Plus version will be available in April.

We also got to take a sneak peek at a power and light emergency kit, similar to a first aid kit. A power bank with multiple USB outs and LED lights that can be daisy-chained come inside a simple pouch and will be released in June. Fozzy Bear not included.

The Vision Council Works to Protect Your Eyes from HEV

2014-01-07

Chris Montera spoke with the Vision Council, a non-for-profit focused on making life better with glasses. Maintaining good eye health is a constant battle in today's era, with people looking at so many screens with artificial, bright light emitting from them. Vision Council looks to alleviate some of the very real pain by putting high-tech coatings onto corrective lenses, keeping eyes happy and healthy.

HEV, or high-energy violet light, is the typical blue light that most monitors put out a lot of and the human eye has a tough time blocking out that light spectrum and in fact, are more sensitive to that particular range. The Vision Council says that both corrective lense wearers and not can benefit by putting HEV coating onto a set of glasses to protect their eyes from macular degeneration and weakening of the eye.

Having a system that displays continuous glucose monitoring is literally vital for patients who require this service, because their bodies cannot regulate glucose on their own. A "Share Cradle" feature also allows users to connect the monitor to a charger and then share the data to up to 5 connected mobile devices. Reebok Creates Impact Sensor to Detect Critical Hits

2014-01-18

One of the biggest topics in sports right now is the prevalence of head injuries. Not detecting a concussion soon enough can cause a player to cause further harm by continuing to play. In some cases, these injuries can be permanent; the NFL has been dealing with past players encountering these issues a lot lately.

Enter Reebok, one of the best-known names in sports equipment. They have created a cap that can be worn under sports equipment, like helmets and hats, or in a sweatband for sports like soccer, that can detect the severity of impacts.

While it won't detect actual injury, with this information, coaches and players can make educated decisions on whether or not it is safe to continue playing. Priced at around $150, this product is within the range of anyone's equipment bag.

IonAudio Introduces a Bluetooth Audio Cassette Adapter [Live]

2014-01-20

Long-time friend of F5 Live, Eric Palonen from IonAudio, stopped by the broadcast studio to show off a product that will probably surprise you: a Bluetooth cassette adapter for your vehicle. While the cassette might be a dead technology, there are still a lot of cars out there with cassette players and no CD/Aux jack. This little guy allows you to connect your phone or MP3 player to your vehicle without the need for wires all over the car.

In addition to this little surprise, Eric also brought by the Flashcube. This second Bluetooth device is an all-in-one sound system, but with a twist. This sound system has flashing lights and can be linked together and controlled to blink together.

Neither device is available now, but the cassette adapter will run $39 and the speaker will run $129, both available this spring.

Hipsters Rejoice with the Chug Plug Battery!

2014-01-20

No more feeling like you've wasted your time writing that screenplay at that popular coffee shop.

The Chug Plug from Lenmar is the first of its kind. It's an external battery pack for the MacBook that plugs into the brick portion of the laptop power adapter that comes with the computer. It adds about four hours of battery life. You don't need any extra cables, you just charge it with your Mac laptop's charger.

Lenmar is working on producing a larger model to cover the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro. Currently, the Chug Plug is only available for the 13-inch MacBook Pro and all models of the MacBook Air. Lenmar has released that the Chug Plug will be available for purchase in March for about $159.

Track Your Brushing Habits with Kolibree Conected Toothbrush

One of last year's surprise computer devices was the HAPIfork, and this year we have another computer you put in your mouth. Kolibree brought a connected toothbrush that allows you to track your brushing habits in the same way the wearable health trend is tracking your daily health.

One of the truly interesting features is the ability to create family profiles and even create competitions between family members. YubiKey Helps Secure Your Online Info

2014-01-23

By now, we all know that online identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the world. It is made easier by a couple of factors: malware, phishing and common passwords. The junction of these issues is where the YubiKey from Yubico comes in. This USB and NFC device allows you to secure your online presence on your computer and smartphone with even less work than is required to give it all away.

Using the YubiKey as your authentication method means that a new, secure password is created and set every time you sign in to one of its connected services. This means you cannot accidentally give the password away and no one can try and trick you into giving it to them. Even if you were to authenticate it once, it would be replaced immediately.

In addition, it requires that you have the physical key and a PIN to access, so even if the key is stolen, it will still be difficult to access your online accounts.

Blue Microphones Joins the Headphone Market [Live]

Blue Microphones have long been the go-to brand for podcasters. Many new podcasters grab an entry Blue to get their show started because of the low price and high value. With USB input it means digital recording is much easier and a sub-$100 price point, anyone can afford the product.

One category within the podcasting audio market that has, so far, been left out from Blue is headphones. The company announces that this will no longer be the case, as they are looking very carefully into the headphone space. They believe that mobile devices don't have the power to run big headphones, and they believe they have a solution for power and quality.

There is currently not a product on the market, but they expect to have some announcements about specific headphones over the next few months.

DataWind Offers Inexpensive Android Ubislate [Live]

2014-01-24

DataWind displayed a new product that was a little surprising to all of us: the Ubislate. This new Android-powered tablet runs a Cortex A7 dual-core processor, runs Android Jellybean and comes complete with a 7" screen, Wi-Fi, micro SD slot and 3 hour battery.

Oh, and the product line starts at only $37.99. Now, of course with that price comes a few oddities. For example, the device offers mini USB, as opposed to the industry standard micro USB. This means none of your current cords will have any value on this device. Also, the screen's resolution is on 800x480, which is significantly lower than standard. In addition, the camera is a 0.3MP sensor, which is lower than the cameras found on the cheapest non-smartphone prepaid devices.

Now, this is not to say this device doesn't have a market. For example, there is definitely a place for a device like this in retail displays, in payment systems or point of sales systems where none of the bonuses are relevant.

Fleksy Introduces Easier Mobile Keyboard [Live]

2014-01-24

Fleksy is an interesting take on the traditional mobile on-screen keyboard. Designed for typing while looking away, Fleksy analyzes your typing habits and customizes its replacement patterns to match your writing. This could certainly help out when typing in a situation where you shouldn't.

The keyboard also offers larger letters, so if you have issues seeing a smaller screen, this might be worth a shot. You can download a free 30 day trial of the keyboard on iOS or Android, including the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. After the trial, the keyboard will only cost you $3.99.

FLM.TV - A Publishing Platform for Independent Filmmakers [Live]

2014-01-24

Services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Instant are great if you are Paramount or Universal, but what if you are a small, independent filmmaker? How can you get your content onto the web without just giving your content over to YouTube and hoping it plays? Also, how can you monetize your content?

FLM.TV has created a platform exactly for this purpose. Publishers can add content and charge a fee to watch it. Along with standard publishing, there is a concept for party watching, allowing a group of people to watch together, including with the publisher. This is a great way for the filmmaker to get feedback on the content being shown. The creators and cast could even create a live Q&A session through the system.

This is a great platform for any independent content creator - film, television or even podcast. For more information on the technology, you can check out FLM.TV.

Gazercam Creates a Small Stabilizer for Your Camera or Smartphone [Live]

2014-01-24

When a product comes to the studio that completely steals Jeffrey's attention, you know it is a cool product. Gazercam's line of camera stabilizers is one of those products.

Designed for phones, cameras and DSLRs, this digital stabilization system can keep photos and video stable in even the most stressful conditions. Jeffrey tests the Gazercam all through the interview and is consistently surprised by its ability to keep up with his movements. With the calibration system, you can even keep the camera stable at an unusual angle, allowing for comfortable holding and stabilization.

The Gazercam product line is not yet available, but, through the success of their Kickstarter campaign, hope to launch within North America in the first half of the year.

There are 3 different ways to gain direct access: Bluetooth LE, smartphone and keyfob. Through the different key options, you can control the access based on time. For example, if a cleaning crew comes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the lock can prevent access to their key on Mondays.

Kanex Bluetooth Keyboard

2014-01-26

While replacing the touch keyboard is good for shorter text input, sometimes you just need a physical keyboard for large text entry. During CES, we write articles from the floor, and there is no substitute for the physical keyboard.

If you are an Apple user, the Kanex Multi-Sync Keyboard can fit that space. This full-size keyboard has the ability to connect to multiple devices through Bluetooth, with easy switching through the function keys.

Unfortunately, the keyboard uses the chicklet-style keys, which is not much better than typing on a screen. Hopefully we will see a future version of the keyboard using keys that are designed for real typing.

Mobile Help: The Panic Button Enhanced [Live]

We've all seen the "I've fallen and I can't get up" commercial, and gag, enough times to know what it is about. We've probably also all thought, "What if she had been knocked unconscious?" The answer, of course, is that she would have just laid there and no one would have known.

That is why Mobile Help is here to change the panic alert. Instead of just hitting a button when you need help, this pendant uses sensors to know if the wearer has fallen and can alert EMTs to the location of the incident.

In addition, this pendant is cellular-enabled and had a GPS tracker included, which means it will work just about anywhere you might go. This is a nice change from the ones that are tethered to your home phone.

MXL: Enhancing Mobile Phone Sound Recording [Live]

MXL's Mobile Media microphones are designed to enhance the sound of videos recorded on a smartphone. Perry Goldstein said,

People will put up with grainy video, put up with shaky video - not centered. As soon as they can't hear, they shut it off.

It's true, too. Any time I see a video with terrible audio, I move on. This device, which plugs into the microphone jack on any phone, allows you to mount the phone and hold it with a mounted external microphone. You can also monitor the audio as it is recording.

When combined with a top-quality camera phone, like the Lumia 1020, this could be an excellent replacement for a larger consumer video camera.

World Wide Web Consortium Celebrates 25 Years of the Web [Live]

In the next 25 years, as music, healthcare, media content and more go online, the W3C expects to be involved in more of the world. As more software moves to native apps, however, the Web itself is on its way out.

Amps & Watts - Speakers and Batteries for Mobile Phones [Live]

2014-01-27

One of the big ideas inside of our company is that where things suck is where the opportunity for products exists. One thing that sucks is playing music out and about on your smartphone and having the phone die.

Obviously, using the phone constantly is going to drain the battery faster, and as more music moves to streaming with services like Xbox Music, that requires even more power. How can you solve this problem at the park, for example?

Amps & Watts is the answer to this question. Producing a Bluetooth speaker that also powers your phone, Amps & Watts has certainly taken the problem on head-first. And, if portability isn't your issue, they offer products in a more Hi-Fi range for home or office.

While this might not be a problem everyone has, it is common and this is the perfect solution.

Keeping Truck Drivers Healthy with Technology [Live]

An employee for Prime Inc., a trucking company, came up with his solution to the problem after personally gaining 15 pounds joining the company. The product measures small, incremental changes in the drivers and alerts them to things they need to change to maintain or improve their health.

This product is so impactful on the health of truck drivers that they received a Digital Health Award because of the average 25 pound loss per driver.

Netatmo June - Protecting You from the Sun [Live]

While it may look like a plain bracelet, that is part of the plan. Not all wearable technology needs to scream "I'm wearing technology" and the Netatmo June will keep it quiet. This device does something unique in the wearable world, too: it helps protect you from sun exposure.

Using a Bluetooth LE connection to a smartphone and a metal alloy face that looks like a crystal cut, this device can track your sun exposure and alert you to dangerous levels. The charm can also be removed from the bracelet and attached to the body or worn on a chain, as long as it has normal sun exposure.

This is great for a day at the beach, an amusement park or any vacation, when we usually forget about how long we are outside, but can be worn every day to prevent normal over exposure. June will be out just before summer, so presumably in time for June.

Scanbuy Helps People Get the Information They Need [Live]

2014-02-03

Scanbuy is a mobile engagement company who, through QR codes, Microsoft Tags, NFC and object recognition, helps people find information about the products they want. Once the information is presented, the company can use the information gathered to help manufacturers better target their products.

For example, if a particular product is consistently scanned by phones with a Spanish language option, but the product is only available in English, the manufacturer can then create a Spanish-language product or packaging option.

The company currently receives an average of 40 data points per scan, meaning there is a lot of information that the product makers can access to make their products better for consumers.

Tomorrowish Layered Screen Social DVR [Live]

2014-02-03

Most people have friends and social media contacts that post about a television show or movie as they watch it. It is so common that people who watch programs later end up disconnecting from social media for a while to prevent finding out about things ahead of time. For example, Nicholas DiMeo will go into a full social media blackout when the Giants play during the show.

But, just because you don't want to know ahead of time doesn't mean you want to miss the social engagement live viewers enjoy. That is what Tomorrowish comes in with the social media DVR. Now, you can enjoy a replay of social media as you watch pre-recorded content as if you were watching live, through a curated experience.

This layered DVR experience currently works with Hulu, TruTV and others. For more information on the technology, head over to their website and try it out.

uPnP Forum - Connecting Devices Through Standards [Live]

2014-02-03

The Universal Plug and Play forum is meant for those networking devices together, but consumers have to know that there is someone out there working on their behalf. As more devices are being networked together, from cameras to phones and even door locks, the universal ability to use those devices is important.

uPnP came by to talk about their work to ensure when you buy a wireless device, it will work with what you already have. We all know there are companies out there, such as Apple, who refuse to follow standards for as long as they can, or until the consumer revolution comes, but uPnP is trying to make it more difficult for that to happen.

Find out about all the great work the uPnP does for technology standards on their website.

Canon EOS 70D - A DSLR Designed for Video

2014-02-08

Until now, no professional videographer would have considered recording video using a DSLR. The focus has never been designed for it, and the lenses and sensors are all designed to take perfect stills, with video added in as an after thought.

Canon has come out with the EOS 70D, which they describe as a game-changing DSLR. This is because it is the first time a DSLR has been designed with video as an integral feature, as opposed to added in because you can string still frames together.

Canon has released special Stepping Motor lenses and the "dual-pixel CMOS AF" sensor, both designed specifically to capture video, as opposed to stills.

Finally, the first DSLR a professional videographer can be proud to use.

Living in Digital Times - Real Products for Real People (PLuGHiTz Live - Special Events)

CES Unveiled New York Delivers Big Announcements for the International CES 2014

posted Saturday Nov 16, 2013 by Nicholas DiMeo

CES Unveiled New York Delivers Big Announcements for the International CES 2014

While the morning of CES Unveiled New York was filled with four intense and information-packed sessions on UltraHD, that didn't stop the Consumer Electronics Association from announcing some big things ahead of the International Consumer Electronics Show 2014 in January. From speakers and concerts to brand new TechZones, the CEA, led by Gary Shapiro, made sure you wanted to be at CES this year.

In keeping with the "monstrous" theme, Monster Cable announced that Fleetwood Mac would be headlining this year's Monster 2014 Retailer Awards. With the awards beginning at 8:45 PM in the Paris Ballroom at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday, January 8th, the iconic rock band will take the stage at around 10 PM and will be playing all of their greatest hits from the beginning until now. Fleetwood Mac follows up a superb performance by Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter, Alicia Keys, who owned the stage in her headlining performance last year.

On top of the all-new Gaming Showcase TechZone that was already announced to be at CES this year, there was another TechZone to be announced at Unveiled. The Hi-Res Audio Experience will take place at the Venetian's Bellini Ballroom and will be anchored by digital music company HD Tracks. Also featured in the group will be Acoustic Sounds Super HiRez Store, Blue Coast Music, Mytek Digital and Native DSD.

CEA's research shows people want better audio and are ready to move away from cheap earbuds and low-quality MP3 tracks.

The research indicates that the appeal of high quality audio electronics extends beyond enthusiasts and that the appeal of hi-res audio extends far beyond higher quality audio devices. CEA finds four in ten (39 percent) of consumers with a moderate interest in audio indicate they are willing to pay more for high quality audio electronics devices and that nearly six out of ten (60%) of consumers with a moderate interest in audio are willing to pay more for higher quality digital music. Nine in ten consumers say sound quality is the most important component of a quality audio experience.

Attendees will be able to put their hands on everything from high-end audio tracks played through personal headphones attached to sound amplifiers, all the way to THX-certified listening experiences that fill a room with sound. Coupled with the TechZone will be three conference sessions to educate people on the importance of this new hi-res digital age. Welcome to the Hi-Res Music World will take place from 1-2 PM on Jan 7, Meet the Hi-Res Music Creators from 3-4 PM on Jan 7 and Hi-Res Audio for Every Lifestyle from 1-2 PM on Jan 8. While I won't be able to make the sessions due to our hectic schedule at CES, rest assured I'll be at the TechZone trying out all the new gadgets and experiencing hi-res audio.

Lastly, Gary Shapiro himself announced two powerful speakers that will be added to the Tech Titans keynote series at CES. First, Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers will be presenting a keynote on Jan 7 at 4:30 PM in the Venetian Palazzo Ballroom. He will be discussing Cisco's vision for the "Internet of Everything," which connects people with data, devices and everything else. On Chambers presenting at CES, Shapiro said,

The Internet of Everything is changing everything, creating greater opportunities for organizations, individuals, communities and countries than we saw with the first wave of the Internet. John Chambers is an industry visionary, and we are excited to welcome him back to the CES stage to share Cisco's strategy for innovation to drive this market transition and create value as 'everything' comes online.

The keynote from one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people will coincide with the Internet of Everything TechZone in Central Hall, which products from all different categories will be on display. Cisco representatives will be on-hand to demonstrate how systems and devices can all integrate and live in one single, harmonious tech world.

Mr. Shapiro also took the stage to announce one final speaker for the Tech Titans keynote series, and this is the one I'm most excited for. Former Google exec and new CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer, will deliver a keynote from the LVH Theater on Jan 7 at 1 PM. Truly a "rock star" in the technology world right now, Mayer fits right in with the direction of the series for the CEA.

As a defining innovator making waves in the online and mobile space and a fresh breath for the industry, Marissa Mayer is a perfect addition to our Tech Titans keynote series. We're thrilled to welcome her to the CES stage to share her strategic vision for the evolving tech landscape.

All of this goes down Jan 7-10 in Las Vegas during CES 2014. Of course, you can follow along with us right here at F5Live.tv or at TPN.tv. We'll be live-streaming all week long and will also be bringing you show floor coverage, along with the after-hours conventions like Digital Experience, Show Stoppers and all of the private parties and events. You won't want to miss out!
