Living in Digital Times - Real Products for Real People

2014-01-06

Jeffrey Powers decided to start the show off right by talking with Robin Raskin, a former PC Magazine editor now with Living in Digital Times, who has brought products that people really need to CES 2014.

Canary is a home automation hub, in a similar vein to Nexia, but with the added bonus of temperature monitoring, noise detection and other less automation-focused sensors.

Through their focus on families, Living in Digital Times also showed off Kurio, a smartphone for kids without the full smartphone price tag. In addition, the phone sports some family-friendly features, such as app-specific time limits so parents can turn off games at 8pm and texting at 9pm.

Robin also discusses a product to help coaches better determine whether players should stay on the field or not after a hit.

2014-01-07

A trip to the IEEEatCES TechZone in the halls of CES 2014 led us to discover the new Neptune Pine Smartwatch. Not only does Chris Miller talk to the CEO, Simon Tian, about Neptune and their latest wearable, but he also got to put his hands on the smartwatch.

Chris has had some time with Neptune in the past, interviewing CTO Aaron Wilkins and discussing more of the technical aspects of the Pine. This time around, we learn about the features of the phone and what it can do in a broader sense.

Have Light and Power in Emergencies with Waka Waka

2014-01-07

What's better than a solar-powered charger combined with a light? A company that makes said product and then helps third world countries by making the devices available at an affordable rate to people who make less than $2 per day in countries that do not have an electrical grid. Wakka Wakka does just that.

Dubbed the "iPhone of solar chargers," in an emergency situation, a single charge can give you 200 hours of LED light or can fully charge a dead smartphone. With a five month shelf life for discharge, you can leave this device in the drawer and save it for an emergency situation. The Waka Waka Power is available now and the Plus version will be available in April.

We also got to take a sneak peek at a power and light emergency kit, similar to a first aid kit. A power bank with multiple USB outs and LED lights that can be daisy-chained come inside a simple pouch and will be released in June. Fozzy Bear not included.

The Vision Council Works to Protect Your Eyes from HEV

2014-01-07

Chris Montera spoke with the Vision Council, a non-for-profit focused on making life better with glasses. Maintaining good eye health is a constant battle in today's era, with people looking at so many screens with artificial, bright light emitting from them. Vision Council looks to alleviate some of the very real pain by putting high-tech coatings onto corrective lenses, keeping eyes happy and healthy.

HEV, or high-energy violet light, is the typical blue light that most monitors put out a lot of and the human eye has a tough time blocking out that light spectrum and in fact, are more sensitive to that particular range. The Vision Council says that both corrective lense wearers and not can benefit by putting HEV coating onto a set of glasses to protect their eyes from macular degeneration and weakening of the eye.

2014-01-07

Chris Montera visited the InBody booth at CES 2014 to learn more about a company that is looking to help decrease obesity in the industrialized world. One way InBody does that is through monitoring your body, defining problems to fix and then setting targeted goals to fix them.

InBody systems from BioSpace give a person access to a bunch of information that could help improve their lifestyle and health. Using an 8-point tactile electrode method, the InBody system determines your body makeup and is already FDA approved to be used in the US. InBody says its system is extremely accurate and can return high-quality results that can really turnaround your life, improve your body fat and increase your wellness.

United Healthcare Educates the Whole Community Through New Online Programs

2014-01-15

The Digital Health Pavilion at International CES was so large that we spent almost an entire day covering all things health-tech. United Healthcare had a booth and Tom Paul spoke with us at CES about how the company is looking to connect with its customers in today's digital age.

Now more than ever, patients want more information about their health and want to be educated on treatments and healthy lifestyles. They also want to be able to see their insurance information online and have it readily available. United Healthcare is working in several spaces to bring more connectivity between patients, their health and their life choices. The company is promoting healtheir living through community involvement and have even teamed up with the popular dance-step game Dance, Dance, Revolution to introduce games and contests in schools to bring more education to the younger generation.

United Healthcare introduced "My Easy Book," which is a new program allowing customers to find healthcare providers, schedule appointments, pay fees and more, all online. The organization is also looking to bring more information and education to those with diabetes, by creating a program solely focused on the disease. These new programs will be available to both members and non-members, which truly shows the committment from United Healthcare to better the community as a whole.

Dexcom's Continuous Blood Glucose Monitoring System

2014-01-15

Descom's CEO Terry Gregg spoke with the Tech Podcast Network team on a new device coming from the company that monitors glucose levels in a whole new way. The Dexcom G4 Platinum glucose monitor is a continuous monitoring system that has a 20 foot wireless range, displaying trends and stats on a video monitor, and comes complete with a small receiver available in classic black, ocean blue and tickled pink.

Having a system that displays continuous glucose monitoring is literally vital for patients who require this service, because their bodies cannot regulate glucose on their own. A "Share Cradle" feature also allows users to connect the monitor to a charger and then share the data to up to 5 connected mobile devices. This is perfect if other family members or a caregiver needs to check up on the patient.

Vuzik's M100 Smart Glass Wearable

2014-01-17

Obviously, this year had a lot of wearable technology and our resident wearable expert, Jeffrey Powers, spoke to Vuzik about the M100. Jeffrey, who is a regular wearer of Google Glass, has an interesting take on the technology.

The M100 is geared more towards industrial use, with the ability to snap onto an existing pair of glasses or safety goggles, allowing the wearer to maintain protection or standard visibility. The Android-powered device allows for tracking of events, managing of calendars, scanning products, taking photos and videos and much more.

While designed for industrial or commercial use, these are not the only uses for the M100. Healthcare, retail, etc. all have potential with this portable computer, as well as the same limited personal uses that Google Glass offers.

Google's Nest Launches Nest Protect Smart Smoke Alarm

2014-01-18

Shortly before announcing its acquisition by Google, Nest, known for their smart thermostat and mobile application for controlling the system remotely, announced the Nest Protect. The newest addition to the Nest family, the Protect is a carbon monoxide and smoke detector, but with traditional Nest capabilities.

Tied into the existing Nest applications, the Protect can inform you, near or far, if there is a problem. If it is a self-contained problem, like a burned pizza, you can disable the warning without having to get something to fan at the detector. You can even get a message when it is time to replace the battery.

Eton Increases Its Home Protection Line with Blackout Buddy CO

2014-01-18

We've all seen rechargeable flashlights; many of us own them. One of the best is a product from Eton and the American Red Cross: the Blackout Buddy. This product, in addition to being rechargeable, comes on automatically when the power goes out.

Eton has decided to build on this idea, creating a new member of the family: the Blackout Buddy CO. Adding in a home security feature: a carbon monoxide detector and alarm, this device is part of a growing trend of products helping keep people safe in their homes.

This is definitely an appropriate combination of security and safety products, all for a price that could allow it to be a normal part of every home: $59.99. Look for it this summer, just in time for hurricane season.

Reebok Creates Impact Sensor to Detect Critical Hits

2014-01-18

One of the biggest topics in sports right now is the prevalence of head injuries. Not detecting a concussion soon enough can cause a player to cause further harm by continuing to play. In some cases, these injuries can be permanent; the NFL has been dealing with past players encountering these issues a lot lately.

Enter Reebok, one of the best-known names in sports equipment. They have created a cap that can be worn under sports equipment, like helmets and hats, or in a sweatband for sports like soccer, that can detect the severity of impacts.

While it won't detect actual injury, with this information, coaches and players can make educated decisions on whether or not it is safe to continue playing. Priced at around $150, this product is within the range of anyone's equipment bag.

Omnimount Makes Standing at Your Desk More Convenient

2014-01-18

One of the health trends in the modern office is standing desks. Standing more throughout your day can help prevent diabetes improves cardiovascular health. Unfortunately, no work environment can allow for a constant standing scenario.

Fortunately Omnimount has created a line of products that can allow you to use the same workstation for both sitting and standing. Our CES live studio broadcast desk was built using Omnimount's full desk option, but what if your desk is provided by the office and you can't replace it?

There is now a solution to this problem as well. Omnimount's Workfit is a desktop or laptop stand that attaches to the back of your desk through the cable hole and can be raised and lowered at will, similar to our desk.

These workstations will be available later this spring and will retail starting at $649. For more information about the Workfit series and the standing lifestyle, check out JustStand.org

GreatCall Launches 5Star - A Product for Independent Seniors

2014-01-18

GreatCall, the people who bring you the Jitterbug, have expanded their line of mobile devices for independent seniors. 5Star, a small cellular device that can be clipped onto clothing or a purse, allows the carrier to call for help simply by pushing a button.

The first thought is that the device and service are similar to LifeAlert, but there are a lot of differences. First, being cellular and GPS enabled allows the service to be used wherever you are and first responders can know your location. Secondly, GreatCall Link is available, which allows contacts to connect to the device remotely and get information about the status and whereabouts of the carrier.

If you have an older family member who lives independently, this is something to consider to provide peace of mind to everyone involved.

Chevy Brings the App Market to the Car

2014-01-20

Ford wasn't the only one to show us some new car love. Chevy also showed off some of their new additions to their vehicle lines. Their two new, exciting features are the in-vehicle hotspot and App Shop.

First, we all want easy Internet access in the car. Whether we are just looking to stream music or a group of people are traveling together and want to play games, Internet in the car would be nice. Chevy's OnStar system has added just that capability, adding a phone number and Wi-Fi access to your vehicle.

That Internet access is going to come in handy, too, because Chevy has also added an App catalog to their vehicles, named App Shop. Launching with 12 available apps, such as Pandora and Priceline, the available API will allow app developers to bring their creations to your car.

Ford's Solar-Powered Energi C-Max Project

2014-01-20

In addition to the 2015 Ford Mustang, Ford also showed off a new and exciting hybrid: the Energi C-Max. This plug-in hybrid can be powered 3 ways: wall-power, gasoline and solar power.

Yes, you read that right: this car can be charged partially from the solar panels on its roof. The panels, which are high efficiency Monocrystalline cells, can even charge the vehicle on overcast days, meaning you get even more time without gasoline. With an additional lens, the efficiency can even be increased.

This concept vehicle is, obviously, not yet available for the public, but I hope we will see it, or something built off of the concept, on the roads sooner than later.

IonAudio Introduces a Bluetooth Audio Cassette Adapter [Live]

2014-01-20

Long-time friend of F5 Live, Eric Palonen from IonAudio, stopped by the broadcast studio to show off a product that will probably surprise you: a Bluetooth cassette adapter for your vehicle. While the cassette might be a dead technology, there are still a lot of cars out there with cassette players and no CD/Aux jack. This little guy allows you to connect your phone or MP3 player to your vehicle without the need for wires all over the car.

In addition to this little surprise, Eric also brought by the Flashcube. This second Bluetooth device is an all-in-one sound system, but with a twist. This sound system has flashing lights and can be linked together and controlled to blink together.

Neither device is available now, but the cassette adapter will run $39 and the speaker will run $129, both available this spring.

Hipsters Rejoice with the Chug Plug Battery!

2014-01-20

No more feeling like you've wasted your time writing that screenplay at that popular coffee shop.

The Chug Plug from Lenmar is the first of its kind. It's an external battery pack for the MacBook that plugs into the brick portion of the laptop power adapter that comes with the computer. It adds about four hours of battery life. You don't need any extra cables, you just charge it with your Mac laptop's charger.

Lenmar is working on producing a larger model to cover the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro. Currently, the Chug Plug is only available for the 13-inch MacBook Pro and all models of the MacBook Air. Lenmar has released that the Chug Plug will be available for purchase in March for about $159.

Track Your Brushing Habits with Kolibree Conected Toothbrush

2014-01-22

As everything is quickly becoming a computer, or at least having a computer embedded, we are seeing some odd and creative uses. One of last year's surprise computer devices was the HAPIfork, and this year we have another computer you put in your mouth. Kolibree brought a connected toothbrush that allows you to track your brushing habits in the same way the wearable health trend is tracking your daily health.

One of the truly interesting features is the ability to create family profiles and even create competitions between family members. For example, you can pit your children against each other to see who brushes their teeth better. This is gamification of the real world in a way that makes everyone healthier.

The toothbrush will be available this summer and retail between $99 and $199, with the mobile app will be available for free.

Hearing Aids with Smartphone Integration from Siemens

2014-01-22

Siemens showed off their MiniTek hearing aids, which are Bluetooth enabled and able to connect wirelessly to your smartphone. In addition to the obvious features you would expect from any Bluetooth things in your ear, the ability to make calls and listen to music, these hearing aids add some unique capabilities.

Rather than fiddling with a remote in your pocket or dials and buttons on the sides of the hearing aids, you have the ability to adjust the settings right from your phone. Now, instead of looking like a lunatic poking at your ear or pointing a remote at it, you can just look like you are checking your phone like everyone else.

The MiniTek is available now through your local hearing professional.

Most wearable technology looks like it is designed for people who want people to know they are wearing technology. These pieces have the ability to be completely customized. From changing the color of a necklace to fit your mood or outfit to being used as a wireless notification device, there are plenty of uses for this wearable technology. These prototypes are not available for purchase yet, but based on the reaction at the show, their availability is inevitable.

Liquid Image Adds LTE to Wearable Cameras

Liquid Image, a well-known manufacturer of wearable cameras, has added a brand new feature to their product line: Verizon Wireless LTE. With the addition of LTE, these cameras will now have the ability to stream their videos live from anywhere Verizon LTE is available.

The obvious use for this product is sports, but there is a need for something like this for first responders, as well. The LTE version of the camera will run $399 starting this summer, while the Wi-Fi model for around $199.

Their new platform is, despite their ownership, will be available in many major vehicle brands, including competitor GM, and allows developers to interact with the capabilities of the vehicle's entertainment system.

If this new standard comes to pass, it will streamline the development process for companies looking to get their apps into cars across brands. YubiKey Helps Secure Your Online Info

2014-01-23

By now, we all know that online identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the world. It is made easier by a couple of factors: malware, phishing and common passwords. The junction of these issues is where the YubiKey from Yubico comes in. This USB and NFC device allows you to secure your online presence on your computer and smartphone with even less work than is required to give it all away.

Using the YubiKey as your authentication method means that a new, secure password is created and set every time you sign in to one of its connected services. This means you cannot accidentally give the password away and no one can try and trick you into giving it to them. Even if you were to authenticate it once, it would be replaced immediately.

In addition, it requires that you have the physical key and a PIN to access, so even if the key is stolen, it will still be difficult to access your online accounts.

HipShotDot Enhances Your FPS Accuracy [Live]

2014-01-24

For years, first person shooter players have been creating physical sights for their games in an attempt to improve their accuracy. With a piece of Scotch tape and a red Sharpie comes some help, but the dot often gets lost into the gaming environment.

What doesn't get lost is a bright, glowing red light, just like an actual red dot sight. With that idea in mind, HipShotDot created a USB-powered red dot sight that can stick onto your television and give you a physical sight for the game.

With a physical sight comes the ability to use an extra accessory for your most powerful guns, instead of having to use an in-game sight. You also don't have the problem of losing the sight when an EMP grenade goes off, keeping your accuracy up. Check the product out in the video, then pick yours up here for $29.95.

Blue Microphones Joins the Headphone Market [Live]

2014-01-24

Blue Microphones have long been the go-to brand for podcasters. Many new podcasters grab an entry Blue to get their show started because of the low price and high value. With USB input it means digital recording is much easier and a sub-$100 price point, anyone can afford the product.

One category within the podcasting audio market that has, so far, been left out from Blue is headphones. The company announces that this will no longer be the case, as they are looking very carefully into the headphone space. They believe that mobile devices don't have the power to run big headphones, and they believe they have a solution for power and quality.

There is currently not a product on the market, but they expect to have some announcements about specific headphones over the next few months.

DataWind Offers Inexpensive Android Ubislate [Live]

2014-01-24

DataWind displayed a new product that was a little surprising to all of us: the Ubislate. This new Android-powered tablet runs a Cortex A7 dual-core processor, runs Android Jellybean and comes complete with a 7" screen, Wi-Fi, micro SD slot and 3 hour battery.

Oh, and the product line starts at only $37.99. Now, of course with that price comes a few oddities. For example, the device offers mini USB, as opposed to the industry standard micro USB. This means none of your current cords will have any value on this device. Also, the screen's resolution is on 800x480, which is significantly lower than standard. In addition, the camera is a 0.3MP sensor, which is lower than the cameras found on the cheapest non-smartphone prepaid devices.

Now, this is not to say this device doesn't have a market. For example, there is definitely a place for a device like this in retail displays, in payment systems or point of sales systems where none of the bonuses are relevant.

FLM.TV has created a platform exactly for this purpose. Publishers can add content and charge a fee to watch it. Along with standard publishing, there is a concept for party watching, allowing a group of people to watch together, including with the publisher. This is a great way for the filmmaker to get feedback on the content being shown. The creators and cast could even create a live Q&A session through the system.

This is a great platform for any independent content creator - film, television or even podcast. For more information on the technology, you can check out FLM.TV.

Gazercam Creates a Small Stabilizer for Your Camera or Smartphone [Live]

2014-01-24

When a product comes to the studio that completely steals Jeffrey's attention, you know it is a cool product. Gazercam's line of camera stabilizers is one of those products.

Designed for phones, cameras and DSLRs, this digital stabilization system can keep photos and video stable in even the most stressful conditions. Jeffrey tests the Gazercam all through the interview and is consistently surprised by its ability to keep up with his movements. With the calibration system, you can even keep the camera stable at an unusual angle, allowing for comfortable holding and stabilization.

The Gazercam product line is not yet available, but, through the success of their Kickstarter campaign, hope to launch within North America in the first half of the year.

2014-01-24

Awarded one of the TPN.tv Innovator Picks, GeoNaute 360 is an action camera designed to take a full 360 degree photo or record 360 degree videos.

The video can be watched using the GeoNaute viewer, which enables the viewer to adjust the viewing angle at any point during playback. You can also edit the video using a standard video editing program, and play back in the app continuing to have the 360 degree option.

Goji's Smart Home Lock System [Live]

2014-01-25

Goji Access is a smart lock that makes securing your home easier. With the built-in camera, you can see who is at the door before opening it, or see who was at the door if they have access and unlock it themselves. You can also send a custom greeting to the lock's screen.

There are 3 different ways to gain direct access: Bluetooth LE, smartphone and keyfob. Through the different key options, you can control the access based on time. For example, if a cleaning crew comes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the lock can prevent access to their key on Mondays.

Goji Access is expected to be available in March 2014.

GoProng - Case With Built-In Plug [Live]

2014-01-25

When traveling, or even just in the course of a normal day, having a charger for your phone can be an issue. Somehow, you never have it when you need it. It was only a matter of time before someone figured out a way to charge a phone without the charger.

That time is now. GoProng is a smartphone case, currently available for the iPhone, that has a charger built-in. Just flip the plug out from the back of the case and plug it into the wall.

The iPhone cases start at $59.95, with common Android models to follow.

The robots, which will run $35 when they become available this year, are controlled by a smartphone or tablet. These bots can be controlled by devices running Android, iOS or windows Phone, meaning anyone can enjoy the ridiculous fun these toys provide.

OmniMount PJT40 Projector Mount [Live]

OmniMount has been a big part of our broadcast this year. Even the table in the broadcast booth is built based on their sit/stand desk base. It was obvious that we needed to bring them on to talk about some of their products.

One of the mounts the company is particularly proud of is the PJT40 projector mount. This new, universal projector mount is easy to install, requiring only a single person. I have installed other projector mounts in the past and it has not been an easy process.

The new mount is available now for $179.

Kanex Bluetooth Keyboard

2014-01-26

While replacing the touch keyboard is good for shorter text input, sometimes you just need a physical keyboard for large text entry. During CES, we write articles from the floor, and there is no substitute for the physical keyboard.

If you are an Apple user, the Kanex Multi-Sync Keyboard can fit that space. This full-size keyboard has the ability to connect to multiple devices through Bluetooth, with easy switching through the function keys.

Unfortunately, the keyboard uses the chicklet-style keys, which is not much better than typing on a screen. Hopefully we will see a future version of the keyboard using keys that are designed for real typing.

D-Link's Network Video Recorder and Webcam

2014-01-26

D-Link always has a lot to show off at CES. One of the products they demonstrated was a network video recorder, which has the ability to record the video from up to 9 IP cameras. All video is stored on an internal drive and can be displayed via HDMI or D-Link's mydlink.

In addition to the NVR comes a low-light IP webcam. Capable of capturing video with light levels as low as 0.1 lux standard, with a built-in LED to illuminate up to 50 feet when the light levels dip below 0.1 lux. Obviously, this camera is compatible with the NVR above.

Both of these devices will be available in April for $379.

iDevices' New iGrill and Kitchen Thermometers, Others

2014-01-26

iDevices is a favorite of Jeffrey, who personally uses one of their thermometers. This year, the company is launching 4 new thermometers which connect to your iPhone or iPad to help you know when the food is done.

The company also manufactures other products, such as the iSwimband, which allows parents to keep track of their child's time in a pool. When the device is under water for a pre-determined period of time, the device can alert a phone so that you know there could be a problem with a child or other person under the water too long.

The Kitchen Thermometer is available $39.99 to $79.99 and the iGrill ranges from $39.99 to $99.99.

KidzVuz - A Video Sharing Site for Kids [Live]

2014-01-26

Kids are creative; there is no getting around that. Unfortunately, the Internet is not a place for creative kids, because so many of the sites require users to be 13-years-old to post content.

KidzVuz is a free service that allows kids to create and publish video content in a safe place that is for them. All content that is uploaded to the site is owned entirely by the children, no data is ever collected about the uploaders and content can be completely deleted at any time. Also, after getting old enough to venture away from the system, and content that was posted can be transferred to YouTube, Vimeo or anywhere else without issue.

Mobile Help: The Panic Button Enhanced [Live]

2014-01-27

We've all seen the "I've fallen and I can't get up" commercial, and gag, enough times to know what it is about. We've probably also all thought, "What if she had been knocked unconscious?" The answer, of course, is that she would have just laid there and no one would have known.

That is why Mobile Help is here to change the panic alert. Instead of just hitting a button when you need help, this pendant uses sensors to know if the wearer has fallen and can alert EMTs to the location of the incident.

In addition, this pendant is cellular-enabled and had a GPS tracker included, which means it will work just about anywhere you might go. This is a nice change from the ones that are tethered to your home phone.

The complete system is available now for $40 per month.

MXL: Enhancing Mobile Phone Sound Recording [Live]

2014-01-27

MXL's Mobile Media microphones are designed to enhance the sound of videos recorded on a smartphone. Perry Goldstein said,

People will put up with grainy video, put up with shaky video - not centered. As soon as they can't hear, they shut it off.

It's true, too. Any time I see a video with terrible audio, I move on. This device, which plugs into the microphone jack on any phone, allows you to mount the phone and hold it with a mounted external microphone. You can also monitor the audio as it is recording.

When combined with a top-quality camera phone, like the Lumia 1020, this could be an excellent replacement for a larger consumer video camera.

World Wide Web Consortium Celebrates 25 Years of the Web [Live]

2014-01-27

It's hard to believe it's been 25 years since Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first standards for what would become the World Wide Web. In the time since March 12, 1989 the rules have changed a little and the industry has changed a lot.

The W3C is now in charge of the standards that are supposed to be followed on the Web, despite their incapability to enforce those standards. In the next 25 years, as music, healthcare, media content and more go online, the W3C expects to be involved in more of the world. As more software moves to native apps, however, the Web itself is on its way out.

My ithlete Helps Determine How to Exercise [Live]

2014-01-27

Finding out how long to exercise is a challenge, even for the professionals. The team at ithlete have created a product to help you determine when you should exercise and for how long to maximize results.

For example, if you haven't slept well, an exercise session might not be as effective. Adding in the My ithlete finger sensor can even tell you what types of exercises are good at the moment. A green light suggests intense workout, red indicates more recovery time is needed.

The sensor, co-developed by the University of Sydney, and app are available now for $85.

Scanning paper documents is a great way to keep receipts, contracts, etc. organized and Neat has long been associated with document scanning and organizing. In fact, their product is easy enough to use that we've been using one for years.

Where do the documents get stored, though? Usually somewhere on your hard drive, meaning if the computer goes away because of theft, damage, etc. your documents go with it. You could set the Neat to scan to a OneDrive folder, but what if it could handle all of that for you?

Neat Connect: Direct to Cloud, a document scanner that scans directly to the cloud. Able to handle 15 business cards or receipts or 50 pages of regular documentation at a time, this scanner can certainly simply your home or office life.

FYI Watches - A Designer Smartwatch [Live]

2014-01-27

Geneva Watch Group, one of the largest designers of watches in the world, was frustrated with the lack of visual design involved in the emerging smartwatch market. Where there is something that sucks comes the inspiration for a product, and so the FYI Watch line was born.

The FYI started with visual design, creating a stunning looking watch; something for which Geneva is known. Offering several faces, bands and colors there is an attractive FYI for anyone. But, behind the beauty is a full-featured Bluetooth enabled smartwatch. Text, call and email alerts, plus a proximity alarm to let you know you are leaving your phone behind all make this smartwatch, available now, a perfect balance.

Chug Plug Powers Your Macbook for 4 Extra Hours [Live]

2014-01-27

One of the products that we found on the floor that we felt the need to bring on the live show was Lenmar's Chug Plug, the only external battery for the MacBook Air and Pro. Lenmar made a very smart move deciding to display at CES because a large percentage of their target market was on-site for the event. Because it is so relevant to the CES croud, we awarded them a TPN.tv Innovator Pick.

So, how does it work? The battery is designed and certified by Apple to connect to the magnetic power connectors on the MacBook series and can add an extra 4 hours of power to the machine. That means when you're at a coffee shop writing your "big screenplay" or your next novel, you can power your computer all day without having to wait for a power outlet to open up.

You'll be able to pick up one of these batteries for $159 when they become available.

Amps & Watts - Speakers and Batteries for Mobile Phones [Live]

2014-01-27

One of the big ideas inside of our company is that where things suck is where the opportunity for products exists. One thing that sucks is playing music out and about on your smartphone and having the phone die.

Obviously, using the phone constantly is going to drain the battery faster, and as more music moves to streaming with services like Xbox Music, that requires even more power. How can you solve this problem at the park, for example?

Amps & Watts is the answer to this question. Producing a Bluetooth speaker that also powers your phone, Amps & Watts has certainly taken the problem on head-first. And, if portability isn't your issue, they offer products in a more Hi-Fi range for home or office.

While this might not be a problem everyone has, it is common and this is the perfect solution.

Keeping Truck Drivers Healthy with Technology [Live]

2014-01-27

When you think fitness product, your probably don't go immediately to truck drivers, though perhaps it should. National surveys suggest that 86% of drivers are overweight and 57% are obese. This makes sense considering the incredibly long stints that truck drivers take on, almost entirely sitting and laying down.

An employee for Prime Inc., a trucking company, came up with his solution to the problem after personally gaining 15 pounds joining the company. The product measures small, incremental changes in the drivers and alerts them to things they need to change to maintain or improve their health.

This product is so impactful on the health of truck drivers that they received a Digital Health Award because of the average 25 pound loss per driver.

Netatmo June - Protecting You from the Sun [Live]

2014-01-29

While it may look like a plain bracelet, that is part of the plan. Not all wearable technology needs to scream "I'm wearing technology" and the Netatmo June will keep it quiet. This device does something unique in the wearable world, too: it helps protect you from sun exposure.

Using a Bluetooth LE connection to a smartphone and a metal alloy face that looks like a crystal cut, this device can track your sun exposure and alert you to dangerous levels. The charm can also be removed from the bracelet and attached to the body or worn on a chain, as long as it has normal sun exposure.

This is great for a day at the beach, an amusement park or any vacation, when we usually forget about how long we are outside, but can be worn every day to prevent normal over exposure. June will be out just before summer, so presumably in time for June.

Qardio is a series of digital health products designed to help people get a handle on their heart health. Currently there are two products in the line, demonstrated live on the show.

The QardioCore, available in June for $449, is a sensor that wraps around your chest and can provide clear, comprehensible data that assists your doctor with clinical assessment leading to optimal heart-health. This can prevent constant visits to the doctor if you are having issues with your heart, while the doctor can get all of the data that is required to keep you healthy.

The QardioArm, available for $99 pre-order, is an advanced blood pressure monitoring system. The device provides accurate, trackable information on your systolic and diastolic blood pressure right on your smartphone screen.

Roocase Tablet Cases [Live]

2014-02-03

One of our more interesting interviews, Roocase showed up with a mascot - one of their Roo Girls. The company manufactures cases for electronics tablets and smartphones.

One of the useful features of the case shown off at the top of the interview is the rotating center for portrait and landscape. The rotating piece is removable, as well, allowing you to strap it to your arm for presentations or broadcasts.

In addition, we got to see an executive style portfolio case, which also features the rotating center piece. The case is removable from portfolio, again allowing for presentations, etc.

These cases are available right now, along with all of their other products.

Scanbuy Helps People Get the Information They Need [Live]

2014-02-03

Scanbuy is a mobile engagement company who, through QR codes, Microsoft Tags, NFC and object recognition, helps people find information about the products they want. Once the information is presented, the company can use the information gathered to help manufacturers better target their products.

For example, if a particular product is consistently scanned by phones with a Spanish language option, but the product is only available in English, the manufacturer can then create a Spanish-language product or packaging option.

The company currently receives an average of 40 data points per scan, meaning there is a lot of information that the product makers can access to make their products better for consumers.

2014-02-03

First discovered on the showfloor, Siemens brings their MiniTek hearing aids to the live show. As Jeffrey says, Siemens has made the hearing aid cool.

With directional microphones, Bluetooth and external audio sources, this hearing aid can, in addition to the normal case, be used as a hands-free headset for a phone and also listening to music while exercising.

If you are in need of hearing aids, this device is one to talk to your hearing specialist about.

Tomorrowish Layered Screen Social DVR [Live]

2014-02-03

Most people have friends and social media contacts that post about a television show or movie as they watch it. It is so common that people who watch programs later end up disconnecting from social media for a while to prevent finding out about things ahead of time. For example, Nicholas DiMeo will go into a full social media blackout when the Giants play during the show.

But, just because you don't want to know ahead of time doesn't mean you want to miss the social engagement live viewers enjoy. That is what Tomorrowish comes in with the social media DVR. Now, you can enjoy a replay of social media as you watch pre-recorded content as if you were watching live, through a curated experience.

This layered DVR experience currently works with Hulu, TruTV and others. For more information on the technology, head over to their website and try it out.

uPnP Forum - Connecting Devices Through Standards [Live]

2014-02-03

The Universal Plug and Play forum is meant for those networking devices together, but consumers have to know that there is someone out there working on their behalf. As more devices are being networked together, from cameras to phones and even door locks, the universal ability to use those devices is important.

uPnP came by to talk about their work to ensure when you buy a wireless device, it will work with what you already have. We all know there are companies out there, such as Apple, who refuse to follow standards for as long as they can, or until the consumer revolution comes, but uPnP is trying to make it more difficult for that to happen.

Find out about all the great work the uPnP does for technology standards on their website.

Canon EOS 70D - A DSLR Designed for Video

2014-02-08

Until now, no professional videographer would have considered recording video using a DSLR. The focus has never been designed for it, and the lenses and sensors are all designed to take perfect stills, with video added in as an after thought.

Canon has come out with the EOS 70D, which they describe as a game-changing DSLR. This is because it is the first time a DSLR has been designed with video as an integral feature, as opposed to added in because you can string still frames together.

Canon has released special Stepping Motor lenses and the "dual-pixel CMOS AF" sensor, both designed specifically to capture video, as opposed to stills.

Finally, the first DSLR a professional videographer can be proud to use.

Living in Digital Times - Real Products for Real People (PLuGHiTz Live - Special Events)

CES Unveiled New York Delivers Big Announcements for the International CES 2014

CES Unveiled New York Delivers Big Announcements for the International CES 2014

While the morning of CES Unveiled New York was filled with four intense and information-packed sessions on UltraHD, that didn't stop the Consumer Electronics Association from announcing some big things ahead of the International Consumer Electronics Show 2014 in January. From speakers and concerts to brand new TechZones, the CEA, led by Gary Shapiro, made sure you wanted to be at CES this year.

In keeping with the "monstrous" theme, Monster Cable announced that Fleetwood Mac would be headlining this year's Monster 2014 Retailer Awards. With the awards beginning at 8:45 PM in the Paris Ballroom at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday, January 8th, the iconic rock band will take the stage at around 10 PM and will be playing all of their greatest hits from the beginning until now. Fleetwood Mac follows up a superb performance by Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter, Alicia Keys, who owned the stage in her headlining performance last year.

On top of the all-new Gaming Showcase TechZone that was already announced to be at CES this year, there was another TechZone to be announced at Unveiled. The Hi-Res Audio Experience will take place at the Venetian's Bellini Ballroom and will be anchored by digital music company HD Tracks. Also featured in the group will be Acoustic Sounds Super HiRez Store, Blue Coast Music, Mytek Digital and Native DSD.

CEA's research shows people want better audio and are ready to move away from cheap earbuds and low-quality MP3 tracks.

The research indicates that the appeal of high quality audio electronics extends beyond enthusiasts and that the appeal of hi-res audio extends far beyond higher quality audio devices. CEA finds four in ten (39 percent) of consumers with a moderate interest in audio indicate they are willing to pay more for high quality audio electronics devices and that nearly six out of ten (60%) of consumers with a moderate interest in audio are willing to pay more for higher quality digital music. Nine in ten consumers say sound quality is the most important component of a quality audio experience.

Attendees will be able to put their hands on everything from high-end audio tracks played through personal headphones attached to sound amplifiers, all the way to THX-certified listening experiences that fill a room with sound. Coupled with the TechZone will be three conference sessions to educate people on the importance of this new hi-res digital age. Welcome to the Hi-Res Music World will take place from 1-2 PM on Jan 7, Meet the Hi-Res Music Creators from 3-4 PM on Jan 7 and Hi-Res Audio for Every Lifestyle from 1-2 PM on Jan 8. While I won't be able to make the sessions due to our hectic schedule at CES, rest assured I'll be at the TechZone trying out all the new gadgets and experiencing hi-res audio.

Lastly, Gary Shapiro himself announced two powerful speakers that will be added to the Tech Titans keynote series at CES. First, Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers will be presenting a keynote on Jan 7 at 4:30 PM in the Venetian Palazzo Ballroom. He will be discussing Cisco's vision for the "Internet of Everything," which connects people with data, devices and everything else. On Chambers presenting at CES, Shapiro said,

The Internet of Everything is changing everything, creating greater opportunities for organizations, individuals, communities and countries than we saw with the first wave of the Internet. John Chambers is an industry visionary, and we are excited to welcome him back to the CES stage to share Cisco's strategy for innovation to drive this market transition and create value as 'everything' comes online.

The keynote from one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people will coincide with the Internet of Everything TechZone in Central Hall, which products from all different categories will be on display. Cisco representatives will be on-hand to demonstrate how systems and devices can all integrate and live in one single, harmonious tech world.

Mr. Shapiro also took the stage to announce one final speaker for the Tech Titans keynote series, and this is the one I'm most excited for. Former Google exec and new CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer, will deliver a keynote from the LVH Theater on Jan 7 at 1 PM. Truly a "rock star" in the technology world right now, Mayer fits right in with the direction of the series for the CEA.

As a defining innovator making waves in the online and mobile space and a fresh breath for the industry, Marissa Mayer is a perfect addition to our Tech Titans keynote series. We're thrilled to welcome her to the CES stage to share her strategic vision for the evolving tech landscape.

All of this goes down Jan 7-10 in Las Vegas during CES 2014. Of course, you can follow along with us right here at F5Live.tv or at TPN.tv. We'll be live-streaming all week long and will also be bringing you show floor coverage, along with the after-hours conventions like Digital Experience, Show Stoppers and all of the private parties and events. You won't want to miss out!
